Opera North is set to push the boundaries of the conventional view of opera with Pass the Spoon, a daytime cookery show that’s gone fully, gloriously rogue.

June Spoon and Phillip Fork are live on air, serving up a feast for the eternally ravenous Mr Granules, with decidedly adult ingredients. Plus welcome special guests Mr Egg, Banana and an ecclesiastical butcher who may or may not know where the bodies are buried…

Expect surreal humour, unhinged ingredients and a delicious dose of existential dread – think The Mighty Boosh meets The League of Gentlemen. It’s part opera, part puppet show, part psychological meltdown, all served piping hot by artist David Shrigley, composer David Fennessy and director Nicholas Bone.

With a running time of 1 hour 15 minutes, Pass the Spoon comes with a content warning as it contains strong language and adult humour. You can see a clip about the show on YouTube.

This original production by Magnetic North in collaboration with Red Note Ensemble and Tramway will run from 12 – 21 December 2025 at the Howard Assembly Rooms in Leeds. Tickets can be booked online.
