Gustav Holst’s piano is up for adoption by The Holst Birthplace Trust as part of the fundraising scheme called Adopt an Object.
The instrument was used by Holst to compose The Planets and the trust is looking for someone to adopt it for £3,000 per year.
The Collard & Collard piano was purchased by Holst secondhand in 1913. The composer apparently chose this piano for its light touch due to the neuritis he suffered from in his right arm.
Based at the Holst Victorian House museum in Cheltenham, the Holst Birthplace Trust aims to raise £25,000 to help preserve the historic 1830s house and support the museum’s future.
Other adoptable items include the family gramophone, portraits, and manuscripts. Adopters will receive a certificate and membership acknowledgment.
