Diana McVeagh, author and long-term BMS member, died on 2 July aged 98.

Born on 6 September 1926 in Ipoh, Malaysia, McVeagh became a renowned author on classical music and wrote an important biography of Gerald Finzi and others as well as several books on Edward Elgar.

McVeagh studied at the Royal College of Music in the 1940s and was assistant editor with Andrew Porter at The Musical Times. Since 2013 the North American British Music Studies Association awards a biennial Diana McVeagh Prize for Best Book on British Music.

Diana McVeagh is pictured above with academic and organist Dr Jonathan Clinch who is quoted in the past as saying: “For decades, this tiny lady had a profound influence on the writing of British music history.”
