The Hungarian Cultural Centre London is hosting a series of events celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Hungarian-British composer Mátyás Seiber (1905– 1960).
Seiber was a pioneering composer who became the first professor of jazz at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt before fleeing Nazi persecution. In Britain, he became a leading composer and educator, working across modernist chamber music, jazz, choral music, and film scores, including the iconic 1954 animated film Animal Farm. A founding member of the Society for the Promotion of New Music, Seiber influenced generations of composers through his teaching.
Taking place from 2–4 May 2025, the celebration will highlight Seiber’s diverse contributions to music, from jazz and chamber music to film scores and choral works.
The event series includes a masterclass, exhibition, panel discussion, and celebratory concert, bringing together internationally renowned musicians, scholars, and students from leading institutions such as the Liszt Academy of Music (Budapest) and the Royal College of Music (London).

Curated by Norbert Meyn (Royal College of Music), the exhibition, Mátyás Seiber and the Legacy of Émigré Musicians from Nazi Europe in Britain, explores Seiber’s impact through photographs, manuscripts, concert programmes, and memorabilia.
