An overhaul of the national curriculum shake-up is expected to boost take-up of arts subjects including music, according to a report in The Times.

A wide-ranging review of curriculum and assessment in England was ordered by the education secretary Bridget Phillipson within weeks of taking office.

The Times reported that according to sources close to the review it could recommend widening the English baccalaureate (Ebacc), a measure blamed for squeezing out arts GCSEs.

Introduced by Gove when he was education secretary, schools are held accountable for how many teenagers take and pass GCSEs in English, maths, science, humanities and a language.

The number of children taking music, drama and design technology GCSEs has fallen dramatically in a decade as schools try to hit Ebacc targets.

The review is expected to make recommendations that boost the uptake of arts subjects. You can read more on The Times website (paywall).
